Privacy Policy

Discord Translator ("the Bot", "we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use it, who else receives it and what you control when you use our Discord bot and website. Discord Translator is built and run by one developer.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Automatically Collected Data

When you use Discord Translator, we collect:

You may also give us:

• Language preferences
• Watches, your allow_watch setting and blacklist entries
• Glossary terms
• Tutor progress (streaks and XP) and phrases you save with "Learn this"
• Reviews you post and contributions you make
• A voice offer, if you make one on the Lend your voice page: the language, how well you speak it, your accent if you give it, the voice you would give, an age range if you give one, your microphone, the time you could give and anything you write. It is read by the developer and answered by DM. No audio is collected there, and you can withdraw an undecided offer on that page, which deletes it.
• Voice recordings, if your voice offer is accepted and you read sentences in the voice studio after accepting its agreement: each sentence's audio, how long it is, how loud it peaked, and which sentence it is; and, if you press Say it differently, why a sentence is off and your own version of it. They are kept on Discord Translator's own machines (the web server, and the developer's computer that builds voices, where they are filed under a code instead of your name or Discord id), listened to only by the developer, used only to build and improve Discord Translator's voices, and never published, sold or shared. You can delete one or all of them in the studio, and /deletedata deletes them too: deleting stops all new use at once. Copies on the developer's computer are deleted the next time it collects recordings (once a day), or, if a voice is being trained with them, when that training finishes, and never later than 30 days after you ask. What is built and learned from your recordings, such as the voices trained with them, stays with Discord Translator, as the studio agreement says, because a voice cannot un-learn a recording. A version of a sentence you suggested that the developer accepts becomes one of the sentences others read, without your name, and stays if you delete your data; suggestions not accepted are deleted.
• Premium subscription information (payment is handled by Stripe; we do not store card details)

Saved phrases, tutor progress, reviews, contributions, voice offers and voice recordings are kept until you delete them or run /deletedata.

Voice translation

• Audio is never stored. When you have chosen to be translated (/voice language), what you say in a voice channel where the bot is listening, and voice messages you send, are turned into text on our own machines and the audio is dropped.
• Transcripts are not stored. The text is translated like a typed message (Section 4); only the translation cache may hold a translated sentence for 24 hours.
• What we keep: the language you speak out loud, when you chose it, and your voice settings (female or male, speed, pitch); for servers, the channels designated for voice and their languages. Voice ratings and notes you send with /voice feedback are kept to improve the voices.
• Subtitles for your stream (/voice overlay): your own words, and only yours, are sent live to the private subtitle link you made, while a page has it open. The link is shown only after you sign in with Discord, and we keep its settings (language and look) with your account. What you type is included only if you chose that. Nothing is stored; the link stops working when you make a new one or turn it off.
• /voice stop stops it; /deletedata erases your voice settings with the rest of your record.

2. Message Content Handling

This is the most important section. Here is what happens to your messages.

2.1 Translation Processing

• Auto-translate is on by default in every server, except that a server the bot joined from 25 September 2026 starts with the bot only counting which language its first messages are in (totals per language and which members have written in each, in memory only, no text kept) and translating nothing on its own until it has picked the server's language or an admin has. The bot reads every message of 2 or more characters posted by a person (not a bot) and posts its translation in the channel, unless the server limits auto-translate to configured channels or turns it off.
• The bot also reads the text when you use /translate, Translate Message or a flag reaction, and when someone who is being watched posts. /translate shows its answer only to you, unless you press Post in channel. A flag reaction posts its translation in the channel unless you chose DMs with /settings reactions. Translate from here reads the message you chose and up to 15 after it in that channel, and shows the translations only to you.
• Translate Message and Translate from here translate into the language you chose with /settings. Until you choose one, they use the language your Discord app is set to, which Discord sends with each command. It is not stored.
• The text is sent to Google Translate (through its unofficial web endpoints), which also detects its language. Microsoft Azure Translator receives the text only when Google fails.
• The translated text is cached for 24 hours, looked up by a hash of the original.
• On a Server Pro server with seamless translation on, your original message is replaced by its translation, posted under your name and avatar.
• The bot's own logs do not contain message text.
• Discord carries every message the bot reads and sends.

2.2 Translation Logging

Each logged translation stores up to the first 500 characters of the original and the translated text, the language pair, your Discord user ID, the server ID and the time, so you can see your history on the dashboard.

A Server Pro server that turns auto-delete off keeps its stored translations until it turns auto-delete back on; a member with their own paid plan still has theirs deleted on that plan's schedule. When a plan ends, its stored translations fall back to the free rule and are deleted 90 days after they were made. During a free week of Server Basic, the server's stored translations are encrypted but not deleted on a schedule, so nothing is deleted early; when the week ends, the free rule applies again.

Usage alerts. Every 10 minutes the bot counts the last hour of logged translations, per server, per author in a server and in total, and compares them with the 14 days before. When one is far above its own normal (for example a relay feed using up a server's monthly limit in a day), the developer gets a private message. It carries counts and the server's name, ID, member count, plan, when the bot joined it and its most used language pair, never message text or who wrote it. To tell separate messages apart, the stored text is compared by a hash inside the database; no text is read out. Only the time and count of the last alert are kept.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use collected information to:

• Provide and maintain translation services
• Process and fulfill your requests
• Send translation notifications (watcher DMs), and a DM to a server admin who looked at the plans offering a free week of Server Basic for that server, with one more when that week ends
• Watch translation volumes for unusual spikes and alert the developer privately; the alert carries counts and the server's name and ID, never message text or who wrote it (Section 2.2)
• Show you your own translation history on the dashboard and let you export it
• Show public counts on the website and the tutor leaderboards (see Section 13)
• Show you, in /vote, when you last voted for the bot on top.gg or discordbotlist.com, for a site that reports votes to us
• Comply with legal obligations

4. Information Sharing

We never sell data. We share it with the services listed in Section 9, and in these cases:

• Translation providers: Google Translate receives the text to translate and detects its language. Microsoft Azure Translator receives the text only when Google fails. For voice, that text is the transcript; the audio itself never leaves our machines.
• Stripe: If you buy a plan, Stripe receives your billing details plus your Discord ID, username and, for Server plans, the server name. We do not store card details.
• Discord: Carries every message the bot reads and sends.
• Legal Requirements: If required by law or to protect our rights

Section 9 lists every service that receives data and what each one receives.

5. Your Rights and Controls

You have the right to:

• Access: View your translation history on the User Dashboard after signing in with Discord
• Export: Download your translation history as CSV from the dashboard
• Delete: Run /deletedata in Discord, or in the iPhone app open Personal, then Settings, and tap Delete account. Both erase the same things. For an account made with Sign in with Apple, deleting in the app also disconnects the app from your Apple Account. It erases your profile, history, settings, watches, tutor progress, saved phrases, reviews, contributions, command logs and vote records. It refuses while you have an active Personal plan: cancel it first in the billing portal, or, for a plan bought in the iPhone app, in your Apple Account's Subscriptions, and delete once it has ended. A translation someone else made of your message with Translate Message is stored under their account and follows their plan. It also removes your user ID from any free week offer and withdraws an offer you have not answered yet (Section 1.1).
• Opt-out: Run /settings privacy allow_watch:False to turn off being watched. It removes your watchers in every server and stops anyone from watching you.
• Blacklist: Run /blacklist to block a specific user from watching you in that server
• Watchers: Run /watchers to see who watches you
• Leaderboard: Press Hide me in the tutor to leave the global leaderboard

6. Data Security

We implement security measures including:

• Encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for the website
• AES-256-GCM encryption at rest for stored Premium translations (the key is held on our server)
• Database access controls
• Regular security reviews

7. Children's Privacy

Discord Translator is not intended for users under 13 years of age (or the minimum age required by Discord in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect data from children under this age. Voice offers are only for people aged 18 or older.

8. Cookies & Local Storage

The website uses only strictly necessary browser storage to work. It sets no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies and loads no analytics scripts, and we do not sell or share this data.

• Session token: keeps you signed in to your dashboard on this device after you connect with Discord.
• Sign-in cookie: a cookie named dt_oauth_nonce, set for 10 minutes while you sign in with Discord, to check that the sign-in that comes back is the one you started.
• Preferences: that you have seen the privacy notice, whether you have dismissed on-site prompts, and the language you picked for the website.
• Translated page text: when you pick a language for the website, the translated text is kept in your browser (keys starting with dt_tr_) so it is not fetched again.

On your first visit a notice explains this. Pressing OK only records that you have seen it; there is nothing to opt in to. You can remove this data at any time by clearing your browser's site data for discordtranslator.com; clearing the session token signs you out.

9. Third-Party Services

These services receive data when you use Discord Translator:

• Discord: carries every message the bot reads and sends. See Discord's Privacy Policy.
• Google Translate: receives the text to translate, through its unofficial web endpoints, and detects its language. See Google's Privacy Policy.
• Microsoft Azure Translator: receives the text to translate only when Google fails. See Microsoft's Privacy Statement.
• Stripe: receives your billing details plus your Discord ID, username and, for Server plans, the server name. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.
• Cloudflare: carries the website's traffic. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
• Google (website language selector): when you pick a language on the website, your browser sends the page's text straight to Google Translate.
• Google Fonts and jsDelivr: the website's fonts and some of its scripts load from them.
• top.gg and discordbotlist.com (the bot lists): top.gg receives the number of servers the bot is in, and discordbotlist.com that number, their total member count and the bot's command list. No message content and nothing about you is sent. When you vote for the bot on either site, that site tells us your Discord user ID and may send your username and avatar; we keep only the ID. /vote shows which sites report votes to us.

10. Data Retention

• Logged translations: see Section 2.2
• Translation cache: 24 hours
• Command log: 90 days
• Vote records (your Discord user ID, the site, the time of your last vote there and how many times you have voted): deleted 90 days after your last vote, or by /deletedata
• Your profile, username and avatar, settings, watches, tutor progress, saved phrases, reviews and contributions: until you run /deletedata
• Voice offers and voice studio recordings: until you delete them on the site or run /deletedata
• Server settings: kept after the bot is removed from a server, so re-adding it restores them. The watches in that server are removed, and its stored translations follow the normal schedule.
• Free week offers: one record per server, kept while the bot runs (Section 1.1)
• Usage alert records: the time and count of the last alert, one per rule and server

11. International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed in countries outside your residence, including by the services listed in Section 9.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes through our Discord support server or website. The "Last Updated" date at the top indicates the latest revision.

13. Premium User Data Rights

Premium subscribers also get:

• Stored translations encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM (the key is held on our server; see Section 2.2)
• Shorter auto-delete by default: 30 days on Personal Basic and Server Basic; your choice of 30, 14, 7 or 1 day on Personal Pro (7 by default); 7 days by default on Server Pro, or 1 to 90 days, or off, with /server autodelete
• Your translations (on a Server plan, that server's) left out of the website's public translation counts and language pairs while the plan, or a free week of it, is on. The user, watcher and tutor totals still count you, and your full tutor rounds appear on the global leaderboard unless you press Hide me.
• Cancel any time in the billing portal (sign in with the email you used at checkout). Cancelling takes effect at the end of the paid period.
